- Sheraton Commander HotelJul 05, 2012
I must admit I didn’t have great expectations for the Sheraton Commander. But I can honestly say I was wrong. The hotel’s staff was friendly and informative. The rooms were bigger than you (or I) would expect in an older hotel. I also liked the four-post beds in the rooms as they set the hotel apart from others. The hotel is a 5-10 minute walk from Harvard Square, but it’s in a pretty quiet part of town – perfect for anyone trying to catch a few winks. The fitness center at the gym is a decent size, but the best part of it is the adjoining sundeck. We were told there was no Wi-Fi in the rooms (there is, however, free wired internet) and this may be a turn-off to business travelers. But if you’re going to take your family to explore Metropolitan Boston, this is definitely worth a stay.Recommended for:Family Travelers

This place is nice enough for a relatively smaller brand name hotel. The bathrooms are spacious and clean and the beds a cut above (I did not expect four-poster and that was a nice surprise). There’s a sundeck connected to the gym and a decent view from there over Cambridge (most of the other views from this hotel probably aren’t as decent, unfortunately). The gym itself is an average size, but well-lit. The building is conveniently situated right across from Cambridge Common (and within a ten-minute’s walk from Harvard Square). The employees are nice and easy to talk to and they don’t mind answering questions. There aren’t too many frills about this place: the internet connection is free but there’s no Wi-Fi in the rooms, and there aren’t any valet or doormen, though the parking lot is easily accessible. Still, I’d pick this as a (slightly) more modest Cambridge stay. Like a lot of Boston hotels, the location makes up somewhat for a lack of amenities.
