They say a ghost lives on the sixth floor and I can’t say I blame him for sticking around this historic joint. Situated just across the street from the historic Majestic Theatre and dating back more than a century, this downtown establishment, is chock full of stories.
Famed Jazz musicians have recorded here and well-known travelers have rested their famous little heads here. The decor is still very antique, resembling something like a massive open air train station. The lobby highlights an antique telephone switchboard, reminding you what things used to be like as you fiddle on your ipad.
Sun pours in through high windows into the lobby and lures you out into the world. Lucky for you, the Gunter boasts a pretty little high-rise pool with a view.

It felt like a Parisian sidewalk cafe. Chairs resting shaded beneath a wrought-iron balcony, across the street from the Majestic Theatre. As I walked in, it felt part museum, part hotel thanks to the placards of Robert Johnson and the inviting staff.
There's a sense of grandeur, not quite the level of St. Anthony Hotel, but old world class nonetheless. The lobby is a showpiece, somewhere I could relax with a Jules Verne novel in hand.
The basement floor had me feel like I was waiting alone in a 1920s train station, a brilliant bit of preservation in this modern updated building.
The room was small, which only helped to reinforce that I needed to get out in the only walkable area of the city outside the front lobby doors. But maybe just one more tour coffee at the bistro before I go.

Cool hipster ghost resides in Room 636
Yes, there is a grisly past associated with this hotel but staying here and meeting the resident ghost adds a few more stars to this dated historic downtown landmark property.
The hotel is located near the cities famed River Walk and just four short blocks from the Alamo. There is an abundance of good to excellent restaurants within walking distance and plenty of shopping for those needing to buy your ghost friend a present.
Helpful staff and updated amenities all add up to 4 spooky stars.
