The Sheraton Maria Isabel has a great downtown location, in the heart of the city, It is very close to the iconic statue of the Angel of Independence in the commercial and shopping center of Mexico City on the Paseo De La REforma, one of the main boulevards.

It is also just across the street from the Zona Roas entertainment district, where you can find a variety of restaurants and bars, and conveniently just across the street the other way to the US Embassy! This combined with its international standards, offers some comfort and security to the international traveler who does't know the language or culture.

Still, Mexico City isn't the safest city in the world. It is crowded with over 20+ million people, it is smoggy and filled with traffic congestion, then there is the three of earthquakes, and the mile high altitude and thin air takes some getting used to. Also, you should never hail a taxi on the street, but order one officially through the hotel.

The hotel is older, so don;t expect the nicest, newest amenities, but the location is great for business or as a vacation staging point.

The Sheraton Maria Isabel, a historic 1930s hotel formerly called simply Maria Isabel, offers a checklist of desirable amenities. Guests at the 755-room hotel can use the swimming pool, tennis court and a gym -- complete with sauna – for free, and can pay for swimming and tennis lessons. The hotel also boasts two restaurants, a sushi bar, a lobby bar and a business center, as well as car-rental services, a travel agency, a currency exchange, a beauty salon and shops. Rooms include air conditioning, coffee makers, desks, flat-screen TVs, iPhone dock alarm clocks, hair dryers, irons, safes and bathtubs, and paid WiFi is available throughout the hotel. Still, the hotel felt a bit worn when I visited, with a few signs of disrepair: a wooden board under a sink seemed loose and warped, the air conditioning was out of service in one of the rooms – and apparently in a few of the halls, which were uncomfortably warm – and the lights didn’t turn on in one of the rooms. However, a mid-range price combined with a prime location may make up for some of the missing luxury. For a better view, request a room overlooking Paseo de la Reforma.

There was just something slightly off about this Sheraton. On the one hand, it's a Sheraton, so you know what you're getting. The rooms are standard Sheraton fare, with all the amenities you should expect from a large chain: iron, coffee maker, hair dryer, mini bar. On the other hand, it's a little tough to find your way around this massive, two-tower, 755-room complex. Sure, it has a rooftop pool (which is weirdly small, given the large deck surrounding it), tennis courts and a gym, but just try finding them. The three employees we dealt with weren't particularly friendly. If you'd like to stay in a big, centrally located hotel, you'd probably be better off choosing one of the others along Paseo de la Reforma. And better deals with friendlier employees can be found at smaller properties in nearby districts.
