Shymbulak is where everyone in Almaty goes to ski and snowboard in the winter. It's only about a 30 to 40 minute drive from the center of the city, but after a blizzard the conditions can be harrowing (which is also part of the fun). The road on the way up the mountain is long and winding, and tire chains are absolutely necessary. At the bottom of the slope, rental equipment is available and you can either buy day passes or individual lift tickets. There is also a really good restaurant at the base, with traditional fare like plof (kind of like fried rice) and shashlik (shishkabob - I recommend the lamb!).
As with every ski slope, there are varying levels of difficulty, with one bunny slope for beginners and lessons (available in English) for anyone who needs them. If you're just looking for a decent slope without the frills of multiple cafes, restaurants, half pipes and ski in/ski out resorts, Shymbulak is the perfect place for a winter day on the mountains.Recommended for:
