Si Phan Don is probably my favorite place in Laos. But I think I have a special affection for the people of the lower Mekong / Mekong Delta. I think they are especially genuine and friendly. There is the crazy party scene on Don Det but also plenty of quiet places in Si Phan Don if that is your style. Rent a bike for $2 and send the afternoon peddling under palm trees and past rice paddies. Get a riverside hut for $5 a night and watch the Mekong flw by from you hammock. Now you are living.

Also known as the thousand islands in the southern part of Laos. It is made up of different islands with guesthouses scattered around. There are bridges to the different islands and boats to see the illusive pink dolphin. Be sure to rent a bike to travel the different parts. Amenities are usually basic, but the people are friendly and the pace of life slow.
