Siena

Perfect base in Tuscany for getting around but also having a home base that has shopping, culture and food! We were there right before the Palio meaning we got to see much of the pomp without the enormous crowds and inflated prices. Stay for a few days, relax, and enjoy this delightful hilltop town.

    San Gimignano

The quintessential Italian walled city. San Gimignano is small enough to walk from end to end, but it's hard to make it to the other side if you keep stopping for pictures like I did. The towers are amazing and the city's location is breathtaking.

If you are kind of a wine freak, and I am if only for Italian wines, definitely go to Montalcino where the Rosso di Montalcino and Brunello di Montalcino are produced. They are two of the most delicious full bodied Italian reds you can lay your hands on.

This tiny medieval walled city is conveniently located near Florence but far enough off the beaten tourist path that it still feels unspoiled. The historic walls and towers are magnificent, and the food is incredible.

Just a few km away from A1 highway, exit Val di Chiana. In Rapolano Terme, a very little village in Toscany but closed to Umbria, there are enjoyable baths. Antica Querciolaia offers 3 outdoor pools at different temperatures and 2 indoor pools. It’s very relaxing and its sulphureous waters regenerats you, even though the smell isn’t so pleasant, but you ...
