The ‘Roof of Africa’ encompasses UNESCO World Heritage Simien National Park. Trek or drive through rocketing rugged Amethyst-tainted peaks and plummeting canyons, spot the 4th highest mountain of Africa - Ras Dashen (4543m) and get close to a gamut of wildlife such as Gelada primate with it’s ‘bleeding heart.’ Majestic scenes greet the brave who scale heights to the edge, with jutting misty waterfalls and utter isolation.

Simien Mountains National Park is truly stunning. The mountains and canyons here are certainly comparable to the Grand Canyon and many national parks in the western United States.
A great place to view wildlife, including: Ibex, Gelada, and many different species of birds. The real highlight for us was walking through local villages and seeing the young shepherds in the park at work.
We visited during the dry season. Visibility wasn't ideal and the dust and sand were somewhat oppressive. If you are really here to hike, you may wish to visit during another time of year.
