Swanky. High profile. Celebrity status.
SLS Hotel is part of the Luxury Collection of Starwood Hotels. It definitely lives up to the expectation of luxury: spacious rooms, comfortable beds, private pool cabanas, and one of the top restaurants in Los Angeles: The Bazaar by Chef Jose Andres.
Well worth a visit and stay. Redeem those Starwood points here!Recommended for:

Holy moly - this hotel is one of the most modern artsy hotels I've ever been in. The interior decoration and ambiance here is the perfect mix of Hollywood hip to upscale classy. While the rooms are pretty pricey, you get what you pay for. Everything from your shower and bed to your table and doors are all masterpieces of art. This is also celebrity and people watching central. Even if you don't stay here, make an effort to come out and visit this hotel, have some dinner or just drinks at the bar.Recommended for:

One of the most creative spaces I've been to in Los Angeles. I love the quirkiness and attention to detail. And you can definitely see Phillip Starck written all over it. The folks who built the hotel not just had a entirely new, refreshing concept for the guest rooms but they actually executed it really well. Functional ingeniousness meets playful chic.
One thing that really stood out to me is how they provide complimentary full-sized shampoo, conditioner and body wash to each guest - they do this to reduce plastic waste (imagine all the little tiny bottles that can add up).
This place is worth every dollar. Seriously. As soon as you walk through the front doors of the lobby, you will feel it and you will know.

Spacious rooms and friendly staff all wrapped up in a whimsical package.
I'm not a big fan of boutique properties. Typically, high design equals small rooms, lots of attitude, and poor service. The SLS is a different story and is a great property. Well worth the visit.Recommended for:

A boutique, luxury hotel with all the comforts you don't have at home. It reflects the ever-changing nature of Los Angeles. The SLS began as Hotel Nikko, reflecting Japanese-style architecture. Then, purchased by Le Meridien, it underwent a major renovation and reflected European luxury. In 2005 it acquired still another owner and underwent still another renovation but has continued to emphasize glamour and luxury - this time without any geographic tie-in.Recommended for:

Really fun, quirky hotel that feels like you've stepped into a fantasy land. Great little pool area that always has a good vibe. Wouldn't recommend getting food at poolside though because it's pretentious, over priced and will leave you feeling very hungry. The rooms are a great size and decked out well. They are a little dark though, so if you don't like that it may be a problem for you. Bazaar is one of the restaurants downstairs and has some of the nicest food in all of LA. Well worth a visit to the restaurant even if you're are not staying at hotel.

Gorgeous upscale hotel with beautiful interior decor. It's really spacious inside. The bar has some of the best drinks in LA, with mixologists who truly pay mind to their craft. Had a drink w/ Japanese peach in it... delicious!Recommended for:

The SLS is a very quirky hotel. They have art work that changes when you walk past it, they have a modern elegance, but the furnishes are not typical at all. i think the SLS has a masculine aesthetic that I appreciate. The lobby bar is fantastic with some great cocktails, the rooftop pool is gorgeous and the service it incredible. I really enjoyed everything about my stay and really took advantage of everything it had to offer. My suite room was massive and the layout was really interesting with the desk being placed behind the bed. The bathroom was large and instead of individual toiletries, they hotel has retail bottles that you use. they room has all these quirky elements that are best to experience rather than to read about. The spa is incredible and i had one of the best massages there. I also ate at the hotel restaurant- Bazaar twice and my only regret is not eating there more. The food was prepared using modern techniques like foams and liquid nitrogen, but in a way that made the food experience better. the SLS has been a hot spot for celebrity events and during my stay they hosted a TV Guide hot list party where we saw a bunch of tv celebrities and then the next night had an Aston Martin party. really cool place

This hotel is all about kitsch -- trendy, LA kitsch. The pool is filled with pretty people and the valet is filled with nice cars. Some people really want to experience this, I generally shy away.
That being said, the SLS does maintain a certain kind of charm that doesn't make you hate its over-designed aesthetic, but rather embrace it. The location is decent, right near Beverly Hills (i.e., in the middle of almost any part of the city that you'll want to visit).
I have stayed here and enjoyed it, but it's not on the list of places I'd recommend to friends and family. Rather I'd suggest it as a stop for a drink or dinner. You see, the SLS houses Jose Andres' restaurants and therefore is a bit of a Mecca for me. A few drinks and tapas at his restaurant is enough time spent here, I'd say.
