Always a really good one to take kids to. The dinosaurs, mammal hall, and the Hope diamond are the big draws.

This is a wonderful place to bring kids! There's a lot to see and do. The Smithsonian was one of my favorite things from my trip as a child to DC!

All of the Smithsonian’s 20 museums - the Museum of Natural History, the National Air and Space Museum, the Museum of American History, the National Portrait Gallery, and the National Zoo, to name just a few - are absolutely free to visit. Same with the Capitol Building and the Library of Congress. Unless you go in the middle of a weekday you’ll probably have to battle crowds, but the visit is well worth it.

Amazing History Museum you should definitely visit while in town. The kids will learn so much. You will enjoy this museum immensely.

If your kids like creepy-crawly things, this is the place for you. The museum has millions of insect specimens. Happily, they aren't all on display! The huge African bull elephant in the lobby draws everyone in. Maybe you can get in a few words about the environment and ecology while you are there.

Who wants to see a dinosaur? Seems like about 8 million people a year, second in world volume to only the Louvre in Paris as the most visited museum. Lots of school kids and groups wearing the same T-shirts make it very crowded in the summer. If you need a break from the crowds, try one of the 4D movies. Huge place and free so don't try to see it all in one visit. Or rest with an escape out to the Sculpture Garden for a break. It is across the street and not as crowded.

My favorite Smithsonian Museum. It's a shame that the Dinosaur Hall is closed for renovations for the next 5 yrs but there's still a lot to see here. The Hope Diamond alone makes it worth a visit.

I don't think it is possible to complete this museum in one day. If you're like me and you like to read all the little fine print on every exhibit, you'll be here for days. The amount of knowledge stored in this place is immense!

I loved the architecture in the Museum of Natural History, and there was sooo much to see and sooo much information. You could spend a full day or more in here. But my favorite part was everything about geology, their gem and rock collection was massive.

Of course before you go in there is the Smithsonian Butterfly Habitat Garden. From their go into the building to see all types history from the beginning to current habitat of today. Great exhibits you will need at least 4 hours.

Again you just can not go wrong the with Smithsonian. Top notch exhibits and world class material. It's been years since I have been there and I'm sure there have been several updates since my last visit including additional interactive installations but I would venture to guess that it has only gotten better over time.

All of the Smithsonian museums are amazing, and considering they're free they certainly make sure you get your money's worth, but some kids (especially younger ones) just don't get into it.

The Natural History Museum is a great exception. There's plenty for young people to do and look as, with interactive exhibits and enough electronic widgets around to make the experience feel modern for young visitors. My son has always enjoyed going, even at a very young age! Parking can be difficult but the Smithsonian Metro stop isn't far away, so consider that as an option to save some time and headache.

My favorite exhibit here is the jewels and gems room, where you can check out the Star of India and the Hope Diamond. A lot of the exhibits rarely change, with maybe one new one every 6 months or so. Another must: the dinosaur exhibit!

For its hype, I actually think AMNH in NYC is a much better organized and presented museum. This one is nice, but nowhere near as incredible.

Quite the amazing museum, especially with children. Exhibits are beautifully done, and it's so easy to spend a whole day "getting lost" in our natural world.

Amazing, free museum where you can see dinosaur bones, huge whales and learn all about mother nature! Can get crowded, but really neat.
