Down by the banks of the Colorado River in Bastrop County, you'll find typical small town Texas with an atypical Hollywood background. Tiny Smithville (Pop. 3,817), has seen more than it's fare share of tinseltown fare. Fans of Terrence Malick will well know that his far reaching slice of Americana, 'The Tree of Life' was filmed here (doubling for Malick's suburb of Waco where he actually grew up). 1998's 'Hope Floats' with Sandra Bullock and Harry Connick Jr. was also filmed here and another hometown hero, Austin's Rickard Linklater filmed 'Bernie' in Smithville in 2011 (starring Jack Black, Shirley MacLaine, and Matthew McConaughey). Quintessential small town Texas.
