The fact that the Sofitel isn't in my favorite Roman 'hood faded quickly into the dark Latin night as soon as I got up to the roof terrace. The view rivals the Gianicolo hill, and the service is friendly and attentive. I do like the casual (read: rude) style of typical Roman service sometimes, since it gets right to the point, but this was definitely a nice break. The rooms are big and clean and the beds are ridiculously comfortable.

Aah Sofitel. Let's talk about the service in this place. It is over the top fantastic. The rooms are good too -- not the best design I have ever seen, but they've got a lovely, luxurious feel. The bed was absolutely divine. I have never slept in a bed like that! I enjoyed the deluxe Hermes toiletries and the super fluffy towels (like the bed!). The terrace bar/restaurant was great -- open late and really romantic for gazing out over the city. You could get lost in all those lobbies. The excellent detail there is that because they've got so many little nooks, you can always find a private corner amidst the public space.

The Sofitel near the Villa Borghese may be part of the global hotel chain, but I do believe it has something special. Maybe it was the service, which was humourous and friendly, never too busy to take time to help despite the fact that the hotel is busy. I could have done without the corporate music floating through the reception, but I'll forgive that due to the beds, which are so comfortable that I virtually disappeared into mine. Perfect for helping tired legs recover after tromping on cobblestones all day. And the roof terrace, darling, is a monument to elegant modernity with a view of history, where you can eat delightful modern Italian cuisine. Beats a pub lunch anyday.
