The Soho Grand is part of the new wave of luxury botique hotels in Manhattan. I found it to be nice, but felt it didn't quite live up to the hefty price tag. My primary complaint had to do with the rooms - while nicely done, they were very small with very little room to maneuver. On the plus side, the location in Soho is great.Recommended for:

I enjoyed my stay at the Soho Grand. Though a bit past its prime, the property is still very hip. The public spaces are attractive and well maintained just like the people who stay here. The Soho Grand delivers good design and ambience.
In comparison to many boutique properties, the service at the Soho Grand is friendly. Service is slower and less attentive than at a luxury property but this property avoids the chill that sometimes goes with a properties that think they are cooler than their guest (e.g. any of the Philippe Starck properties in the city).
Rooms are a good size by NY boutique property standards but they are a bit basic. Expect a room that feels a bit more like a Sheraton or Hilton -- i.e., not a lot of character but comfortable enough. Bathrooms are small and the hotel is a bit stingy on soap / shampoo. There are nice views of mid-town from the higher floors. Consider asking for a northern view.
As far as boutique properties in this area go, I prefer the Mercer. The rooms there are higher quality and the service is a bit better. That said, if you can get a good rate here, it is worth a try. At >$500 USD during our stay it wasn't very good value but prices fluctuate a lot and this wasn't out of line with what other comparable properties were charging during the days that we were in New York.Recommended for:

A trendy, luxury boutique hotel in the heart of Soho that boasts both a cool design and a great vibe. The illuminated metal stairs are a dramatic industrial feature, especially when combined with the Old World decor in the upstairs lounges. Don't miss the newly reborn Whiskey Bar on the second floor, stocked with 50 American whiskeys. Gogobot filmed a segment here for the Peter Greenberg Worldwide radio show.Recommended for:

The interior of this hotel is stunning and the design is absolutely sumptuous. The rooms themselves are quite small (the usual for NYC), but are well decorated and come with some unexpected touches (like the toys in the Mini bar).
This hotel is clearly designed for stylish couples and the location likewise is prime for dining and exploring lovely Soho.

I have stayed at the Grand a few times while travelling for work. The staff are incredibly helpful, the amenities and beds lovely, and all in a great location. They even have Kiehls bath products. The rooms tend to be a bit small, but it is New York.
If you don't stay at the hotel, it is still worth dropping in for a drink. In the winter, when the fireplace is lit, the Club Room provides a wonderful setting to enjoy a good cocktail and escape the snow.

This became my go-to work hotel when in NYC. I like it because they get the basics right - great service, free WIFI, good coffee, easy check-in and check-out. Join their frequent guest programme and you will get upgrades and other freebies thrown in. Make sure you don't get put in one of their rooms near the elevators.
