"Try it, it's better than it looks." My mom used that to try and persuade me to eat various mystery foods when I was growing up, and she was usually wrong about the "better" part. However, I'm going to use her adage in this case and apply it to Sommerset. On the outside, it has a plain and deceptive facade. Parking in the garage below the hotel, you might start to wonder about the hotel's integrity and perhaps suspect a bit of sketchiness. But ride the elevator up one floor to the lobby, where you are beamed at and warmly welcomed by a smiling staff, and your eyebrows rise in surprise as a grin spreads across your face involuntarily. The manager of this hotel is delightful, and will help you find your way around San Diego and answer any question you have. The breakfast room is reminiscent of a Hilton or Hyatt, with a surprising spread every morning -- for FREE. And the best part is that all the rooms are suites, so you can dine in, with your fully-equipped kitchenette , or dine out in the San Diego cuisine scene. (And if you do dine in, head down to the poolside courtyard with a glass of wine after dinner. The tables and lights make a nice intimate setting at night.)Recommended for:

This is one of those awkward-looking hotels that turns out to be lovelier than you expected. I parked in the garage and walked around for a minute trying to figure out where the lobby is- I had to take the elevator up to the second floor, though there were plenty of luggage trolleys to make the trip easier. The lobby is nicely decorated and has a computer for guest use. My room was more than spacious with a full family room and kitchen, and the great details like a small welcome snack basket and cotton hotel robes in the closet. I think the crowning glory of this hotel, though, is its large pool, spa, and barbecue area that would be great for some family time or lounging. One thing, though- the elevator will open, let the person on the elevator amble out with their luggage trolley, and then close right in your face before you can get on in spite of your attempts to hold it open. Rude.Recommended for:

Any hotel that offers in-room kitchens instantly grabs my attention. It's tough in this location though, because there are so many delicious bites nearby. Situated in hip and happenin' Hillcrest, the Sommerset Suites Hotel is the perfect spot if you are in town to cut the rug, paint the town red, or, you know, party. Hillcrest is the younger and funkier version of Downtown. The hotel itself was pretty wonderful as well, with a big pool, nice outside area, and a really great staff. The BBQ is the cherry on top, with a perfect eating area outside if you feel like steering away from the confinements of the room, yet don't quite feel up to going out to eat. The Sommerset Hotel is one of those hotels that I will be tucking away in the files of my mind in order to pull it out again and check myself in.
