Seoul is a city that rewards digging. On the surface, it's an ugly mass of squat concrete blocks sprawling over an area of more than 600 square kilometers, an urban jungle spawned from the ashes of the city's near-total destruction during the Korean War. The city plan may be relentlessly utilitarian, and hopelessly low on green space (with the exception ...

Korea's gritty and energetic 2nd city, the port town of Busan is a little rough around the edges, but with amazing seafood (like hoe -- Korean sashimi, pronounced 'hwe'), a fascinating fish market (Jalgachi) and some excellent temples (Beomeo-sa in the mountains and Yonggung-sa on seaside cliffs), it's a place that can easily occupy a couple days. Head to Haeundae ...

Jeju city, along with the rest of the island, does have a very different atmosphere from the rest of mainland Korea. With palm tree-lined streets, breezy island air, and nearby turquoise beaches (white and black sand), Jeju city has a laid-back feel very distinct from mainland counterparts of similar size. Has some great quirky nightlife spots and international restaurants.

용인 (Yong-in) is a quiet suburban city south of Seoul. There are plenty of restaurants and shopping places, but they are all spread far from each other, so a car is great for this city.

I lived in Incheon for a year, teaching English. It is very livable and nicely close to Seoul without being quite as crowded. However, it is kind of ugly.

I really enjoyed Gyeongju, mostly for the fact it is the cultural center of Korea. It is nice to see a lot of the history here from, buddhist temples to tombs of kings. If you really want to learn about the old history and culture of Korea, Gyeongju is a place to go.

Yeosu is one of the most liveable cities in Korea. The ocean is right in front of the city center, historic places are all around the town, great culinary places, and it's peaceful. Short trip to the nearby islands is recommended.
