Your adventure base camp on the southern shore of this gorgeous marine lake, one of the deepest in the USA. South Lake Tahoe itself, though, is one long tacky commercial strip of motels, fast-food chains and strip malls. Not that there aren't some gems of places to stay, eat and drink, but overall it's the most developed and crowded section of shoreline, whether in summer or winter.

South Lake Tahoe is just a 4 hour drive from the Bay Area. I often drive up here during the winter season to take part in winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding. It is also a very pretty place to visit in the summer time as have various camping sites in the area and I have seen folks to water activities in the lake like jet skiing and boating. If you want to get away from the city life, South Lake Tahoe would be a nice getaway place for the weekend.

South Lake Tahoe is a great spot to spend a winter weekend, and easy to drive to if you're coming from the South Bay. Don't forget that it's great in the summer too! I spent a weekend here one summer and went jet skiing on the lake...very fun. The water is clear, and the surrounds are nice.

The lake is beautiful and so clear, if you parasail one can easily see the bottom. The golf courses are great and vary in difficulty. There is also a lot of mountains great for skiing and even better for hiking. This spot is an adventure for all ages!

Access to great hiking in the summer, world class snow sports in the winter and parties across the state line all year round. Could work well for a bachelor party, and gets crazy for NYE.

I've been coming to Lake Tahoe since I was a kid, since I grew up about 90 minutes from here. But as an adult, I appreciate the beauty of it even more. In late April the weather was chilly but very sunny (this was off season) but nonetheless a great time to do some hiking and site-seeing around the lake. I can't wait to go back this summer when it gets HOT.

Really close to the state line, there are some good condos/houses that you can rent in this area and still be close to plenty of nightlife and casinos. The south shore has a more casual, partying vibe than the north shore - so it depends on what you are looking for. Heavenly is the closest ski resort and more advanced skiiers may enjoy the resorts in the north more.
