South Lake is the way to go. If you want casinos, boat tours, skiing, fine dining, nightlife, and much more, this is where you want to go. It covers both California and Nevada, so gambling is legal on one side and other things on the other.

When Gayle and I drive to Genoa NV from the SF Bay Area, we arrive in South Lake Tahoe (via the Pioneer Trail), pick up groceries, cross the state line (and yell Yeah Nevada!), and go up and down the Kingsbury Grade towards "Home.

The east end of the city, on the California-Nevada state line, is mainly geared towards tourism, with T-shirt shops, restaurants, hotels, and the Heavenly Mountain Resort. It's busy. The Nevada casinos just an easy step across the state line in Stateline, Nevada.

A must-visit location year-round. Enjoy both water and snow sports, shopping, spas, dining, exercise and the nature that surrounds. There are a number of hotels and rental homes, great for a romantic getaway or vacation with family and friends.

Your adventure base camp on the southern shore of this gorgeous marine lake, one of the deepest in the USA. South Lake Tahoe itself, though, is one long tacky commercial strip of motels, fast-food chains and strip malls. Not that there aren't some gems of places to stay, eat and drink, but overall it's the most developed and crowded section of shoreline, whether in summer or winter.

South Lake Tahoe is just a 4 hour drive from the Bay Area. I often drive up here during the winter season to take part in winter activities such as skiing and snowboarding. It is also a very pretty place to visit in the summer time as have various camping sites in the area and I have seen folks to water activities in the lake like jet skiing and boating. If you want to get away from the city life, South Lake Tahoe would be a nice getaway place for the weekend.

South Lake Tahoe is a great spot to spend a winter weekend, and easy to drive to if you're coming from the South Bay. Don't forget that it's great in the summer too! I spent a weekend here one summer and went jet skiing on the lake...very fun. The water is clear, and the surrounds are nice.

The lake is beautiful and so clear, if you parasail one can easily see the bottom. The golf courses are great and vary in difficulty. There is also a lot of mountains great for skiing and even better for hiking. This spot is an adventure for all ages!

Access to great hiking in the summer, world class snow sports in the winter and parties across the state line all year round. Could work well for a bachelor party, and gets crazy for NYE.

I've been coming to Lake Tahoe since I was a kid, since I grew up about 90 minutes from here. But as an adult, I appreciate the beauty of it even more. In late April the weather was chilly but very sunny (this was off season) but nonetheless a great time to do some hiking and site-seeing around the lake. I can't wait to go back this summer when it gets HOT.

Really close to the state line, there are some good condos/houses that you can rent in this area and still be close to plenty of nightlife and casinos. The south shore has a more casual, partying vibe than the north shore - so it depends on what you are looking for. Heavenly is the closest ski resort and more advanced skiiers may enjoy the resorts in the north more.

Description

With natural beauty in excess around this location, the powers that be in South Lake Tahoe have taken major steps to bring some more flashy excitement to the area. Opportunities for shopping, eating, drinking and gambling in nearby Stateline, Nevada can be found here. In fact, South Lake Tahoe’s next-door casinos are a great excuse to stay nice and warm inside, as they offer lots of unique games like Sigma Derby that are hard to find anywhere else in the country. In time for the holidays, this area’s population just about triples right around late December. With ski locations named “Heavenly” it’s not hard to understand why. Still, South Lake Tahoe also offers great summer accommodation, with hiking trails and beautiful lake beaches to pass those summer days. If you aren’t trying to swim, the Heavenly Village Gondola is a great way to see amazing views of the whole area year round.
