Thank god for hotels like South Seas, which understands that not everyone who wants to stay in a beachfront hotel in Miami is into throbbing dance music and overpriced cocktail bars. South Seas is on the same block as the iconic Raleigh and across the street from party pad Catalina but it doesn’t even pretend to compete with anyone else and feels much more laidback and casual. The room décor is basic, but the trade off is a much more affordable rate and a refreshing lack of South Beach attitude. Drinks at the poolside bar are affordable and the palm-tree ringed pool looks like the most relaxed spot on the beach. I'd love to stay in the white, oceanfront penthouse suite for the views alone--it seems like the best-kept secret in Miami hotels.Recommended for:

The South Seas Hotel is located right on the beach and steps away from the Lincoln Road shops, restaurants and nightlife. From the outside, I was greeted by a lovely entrance, covered in flowers. The lobby area is very basic, but well-maintained and clean. The front desk staff was great and immediately ready to help. The rooms are fairly large for South Beach standards, and the bathroom was adequate, with nice toiletries. However, there was nothing frilly or fancy about the room. The bed was large, but everything else was standard and basic. There is a pool, but I recommend walking through the hotel gates to the beach instead. Overall, you can't beat the location. The South Seas is a perfect spot to enjoy Miami Beach. When there's so much to do outside, luxuries aren't always necessary in the room.Recommended for:

An escape from the escape! I had no idea that I was beginning to feel South Beach fatigue until I walked into the South Seas and felt absolutely relieved. The pretension, the scene, the non-stop party - all gone. And it was all replaced with a quiet tropical getaway where I could curl up under a palm tree with a rum drink by the pool and read a book. And who cares what product I have in my hair or who I'm wearing? The old Pan Am photos that decorate the place are a really nice touch of nostalgia, and the swimming pool here is a vacation destination on its own. My one complaint is that the bass from the raucous pool parties at the adjacent Surfcomber will totally infiltrate not only the pool area of the South Seas, but some of the rooms as well. Do yourself a favor, and get a north side room away from the Surfcomber pool. I actually observed some guests switching rooms for specifically this reason!
