Sweet, small harbor town with several little stores and restaurants. On Mount Desert Island; this town is authentic Maine. Great grocery store - Sawyers; pick up gourmet picnic items here and a great selection of wine. Great restaurant - Red Sky. Favorite place for a cocktail - the Boathouse at the Claremont Inn. Casual lunch and ice cream at the Quietside cafe.Recommended for:

Fantastic little town. A lot of the old charm of Bar Harbor, on a much smaller scale and without the tourist-trap feel. You can get everything you need there, and also have the whole range of fun: eating, fishing, sailing, kayaking, motor-boating (check out Hinckley Yachts). It's very accessible: various and walkable, with lots of free parking right downtown.
Sawyer's is a great market for local produce and higher quality stuff. Southwest Food Mart is a generic big grocery store that has cheaper essentials. Beautiful, award-winning library has a good childrens' collection and lots of Maine-centric books. We stop by every time we're out. Some new, upscale restaurants, clothes and antiques shops, an expansive drugstore. And right on Main Street is McEachern & Hutchins, a very nice, very complete hardware store. It's a very pretty, welcoming spot where real people live, work, and enjoy themselves.

This town on Mount Desert Island (home to Acadia National Park) is quieter than the main town of Bar Harbor, but there are still many great inns and restaurants to enjoy. The town is a working lobster fishing center as well.
