The Sportsman gets its name from an actual lodge that was built on the property back in the 1880s; it is now home to the events center. The hotel itself has been around since 1962, and its guests comprise an interesting cross section: families who like the proximity to Universal, traveling musicians who are playing gigs at the nearby Gibson Amphitheater, and folks out on assignment for the studios (Warner Bros and Disneyland are both super close as well). A number of films and TV shows have been shot here over the years.
The rooms and hallways definitely have a corporate feel, but the owners have done a nice job modernizing the lobby, and the newly opened River Rock Lounge has a cool vibe—for the Valley. The coffee shop, on the other hand, is very old-school. Nearby Pinz bowling alley is a great spot to take the kids.Recommended for:

Some harsh crimes against design were committed here in the 1970s resulting in this being a wonderfully kitsch place to visit, but you wouldn't have considered a stay without a pair of some rubber gloves and some bleach. The huge pool used to be its only redeeming feature, along with some rather tired references to its history (Humphrey Bogart and Bette Davis used to bring their kids fishing here) but now they've had the decorators in, all I can say is... WOW! Studio City might not be your first choice for a hotel in LA, but the combination of space and the pool (yes, it's still fantastic) and reasonable prices make this one well worth considering.

The Sportsmen’s Lodge is definitely a relic from another time, but I like it! It is kitschy, and embraces it – at a fair price. Driving up you pass a pair of antelope-shaped topiaries as you enter a tree-filled oasis. The large pool is at the center of the property, and – surrounded by lush palm trees and a pool-side summer bar – takes you on an island retreat. (You almost forget about the astroturf). Inside, the wood and etched-glass check-in counter, and colorful, patterned hallway wallpaper makes it feel like Victorian-era Atlantic City. Looking for a little extra romance? Try requesting the suite in room 307 – the only one with a four-poster bed. But they won’t guarantee it, so be sure to confirm upon check in. Also, they’ve recently upclassed their River Rock Bar, and it’s worth a visit. I ordered the crab cakes and a mango cocktail, and both were excellent.
