The Springs Preserve, which houses the Nevada State Museum, a botanical garden and a number of hiking and nature trails, is perfect for escaping the city and exploring the natural and cultural history of the Las Vegas Valley. There are also plenty of events and shows - including some with live animals - that are great for the whole family.

When you're tired of the ding-ding-ding of the slot machines, drive yourself northwest of the Strip and downtown to this combination history museum, natural history museum, environmental science center and nature preserve. It's built atop the site of the original springs (since dried up) that give Las Vegas ("The Meadows") its Spanish name.

The Springs Preserve is where the natural springs of the early 1960's dried up. Today, it's a nice attraction that has a variety of gardens and nature exhibits that offers plenty of Las Vegas Valley's desert history. A good place to check out if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle of the strip for the day.

Tickets run at about $19 for Adults and $11 for Youth (Ages 17 and Under).

I know, nature in Sin City? Here's a place to find it if you need a break from the glitz and neon of the Strip. The Springs Preserve strives to conserve the beauty of the Nevada desert, but express their conservation ethic through a cultural lens.
