St. Baafs Kathedraal Ghent

Lovely Gothic church that dominates the narrow square in front of it. It was originally built in the Romanesque style, but all that remains of this time period is the crypt. Check out the altar art pieces which include a Van Eyck masterpiece - "The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb"

Larger than Bruge but still very beautiful to look at, especially while walking alongside the river in the older part of the city. Very good place to find a pub outside to be able to admire the buildings and enjoy watching the people stroll by.

I have a soft spot for panoramic views which requiere a good old-fashioned climb of narrow stairs, so Belfort was a must on my visit to Ghent. And it should be for everyone, really. The views are the best in Ghent and if you don't want to climb all those stairs, there is an elevator available. But most importantly, it ...

Opposite the city hall, you see a great building which used to house the guild of crossbow archers. it is a stylish building with a nice small virgin Mary statue on the corner. It has long been a prestigious restaurant and hotel, but it is now empty since 3 years and for sale (only 2.600.000 euro's).

The second castle in the center of Ghent. This one is less spectacular and is more rebuild and re-used during the centuries. Still it is a stylish building from the outside and worth the detour. The inside cannot be visited, as this is part of the state archives.

Found within the old town, The Church is truly remarkable in design. The cathedral organ, built by Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, is an interesting piece to visit.

A real medieval castle still clearly showing its primal defense function. Don't expect a fancy interior. Instead you get a few rooms with armor, torture instruments and history. It is not stuffed with items, on the contrary, but all well explained. The castle itself is a maze of stairways, hidden chambers, without any decoration with thick defensive walls. From the ...
