Great place to be still. Door's are often open so the public can enjoy this beautiful cathedral. Excellent labyrinth outside in the front.

Beautiful church and a very unique and beautiful baptismal font. The stained glass windows are lovely. There is a feeling of peace and beauty when you sit and admire the interior.

The cathedral is the center of downtown Santa Fe. Built in the French monastic style, by early French Archbishop Lamy. The peaks were never completed, leaving it to look more like a Sapanish Colonial building. It sits across the street from La Fonda hotel and the Old Federal Post Office, that is now the Institute for American Indian Arts museum. Compared to Eurpoean cathedrals or even those in major Latin American Capitals, St. Francis is austere, like its namesake. However it brims with vigor and charm of the old Spanish West and the pioneer priests who brought their Word to this part of the World 500 years ago.

Lovely building and seeped in history, housing the oldest Madonna statue in Santa Fe. Free and open to the public

Description

Archbishop Lamy commissioned this French Romanesque cathedral in 1869, and it took more than 15 years to complete. Lamy's story has been immortalized in "Death Comes for the Archbishop" by Wila Cather. It is still maintained by the archdiocese of Santa Fe. This long-standing landmark houses many religious relics including the chalice used by Lamy and the oldest Madonna in the United States. The exquisite stained glass windows were created in France, traveling to Santa Fe via ship and then overland on a covered wagon. Admission is free.
