The Cathedral-Basilica of Saint Louis, King of France (aka St. Louis Cathedral), is the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New Orleans. It has the distinction of being the oldest continuously operating cathedral in the US (since 1794). I'm not Catholic, but I appreciate an excellent European-style Church, especially the calm opportunity to reflect and consider life's puzzles. The Jackson Square surroundings just adds to this spirit.

Go there for Easter midnight service. I promise you will not regret it. In more Orthodox fashion the Cathedral is completely dark and they light the Easter candle outside from an open pit fire. Everyone enters silent and is given a candle and when the Light of Christ enters, solitary, into the massive dark space the significance is profound and I cried the entire service. By the end, all candles of each parishioner are lit and the Light of Christ has illuminated everything. Just that one Light can brighten the darkest gloom and it is an experience every Christian should experience regardless of denomination. It is almost, but not quite, as good as the Saints Constantine & Helen Service in Galveston, Texas.

This famous New Orleans landmark is postcard perfect and provides a great backdrop for photos. While in the neighborhood, visit the countless shops and eateries of the French Quarter. Are you seeking a real tourist experience? If so, catch a carriage ride near the cathedral.
