The current St. Michan's is located on the site of a medieval church and while the current place of worship is rather ordinary, the real treasure is through the small doors on the sides. Below the current church are limestone crypts that can be seen through guided tours. While it's illegal to open the caskets of the deceased, a few were exposed by accident and are now on display, each with their own story. The oldest is believed to be the 800 year old remains of a crusader whose hand a visitor is supposed to "shake" (rub gently). I have heard some say that this is a retired practice because one of his index fingers is missing, believed to have been broke off by an overzealous shaker, however on my tour (first of the day on a weekday) there were only three of us, an older couple and myself, and we were allowed to do it if we cared to. So this might be at the discretion of the tour guide depending on the nature of the guests.

Very cool old church built on the foundations of an older Viking church. It is a relatively plain building, but due to the limestone used in construction has vaults that naturally mummified those buried beneath the church. You can check the vault on Saturdays.

Not for the faint-hearted! The crypt is open to visitors. It contains numerous half opened and opened coffins in which the bodies have become mummified due to the extreme dryness of the conditions down there (it doesn't smell very nice by the way). When I was a child you were urged to "shake hands with the mummy". This no longer happens (possibly because the arm fell off).

Description

Though not as large or impressive as the Christ Church or the St. Patrick's Cathedral, St. Michan's has a certain appeal for those interested in history - and in mummies. The church's main attraction is its underground vault, which contain the mummified remains of a nun, a 6.5-foot-tall man (cut in half so he could fit in the coffin), and the Sheare Brothers, executed by the British after participating in the uprising of 1798. Michan's is one of the oldest churches in the city and contains the organ on which Handel is believed to have composed his Messiah. It was constructed on the site of an 11th-century Danish Chapel, and its interior contains fine woodwork.
