Centrally located all-suites (with kitchenette) hotel that is closed to the Collins street shops and restaurants, the Stamford Plaza provides great service, good value, and a very comfortable place to call home away from home.

The Stamford Plaza lobby reminded me of a gaudy casino entrance. The hotel’s name is lit up in red neon lights behind the front desk in the way that one of those “Live Nude” signs would be. So I’ll admit I had fairly low expectations riding up in the clear glass elevator to the room—a suite with small kitchen area and king-sized bed. However, excepting the unfortunate gaming motif, I found the room to be pretty comfortable and well appointed. Everything was clean and the concierge who showed us to our room was very nice and knowledgable about both the hotel and the city. He told us the whole hotel would be undergoing renovations in the coming months, so hopefully they’ll modernize the whole asthetic because as far as functionality goes, the Stamford Plaza is actually not bad.

Honestly, when I walked into the Stamford lobby, the first words I thought of were “Strip Club.” The reception desk is lit up with blue, the hotel name behind it is lit up with red, the carpet looks like a chessboard and my first impression of the hotel was that it was trying to be classier than it was. Nonetheless, once you get past the lobby it is indeed a well-appointed building, with an open air centre running from the top to bottom, ubiquitous flatscreens welcoming me to the hotel, and an extremely friendly and knowledgeable concierge.

The rooms are nice (though the televisions are a little small and lounge room a little narrow in the studio suites) and the building recently enjoyed a ten million dollar refurbishment of their rooms, so the colours aren’t as washed out as many of the older hotels in Melbourne’s CBD can be. The gym is lacking (no free weights) but the pool is lovely, semi-outdoor and heated to 34 degrees. The food is superb. While I find the decor a little tacky, I would recommend the place.

This is a fine hotel if you are working or playing nearby. The room was large, with well stocked, if dusty, kitchenette with eating table and a sofa in the "living room." The bathtub was surprisingly nice and spa like. Rest of room, while large, felt really dated and well worn. Would be good for a small group attending a sporting event or a business person on extended travel who needed food storage/prep. However, if you are going to stay in Mel longer term I'd find a cool apartment-like lodging vs this very uncool dated traveling salesman stop.
