As with many big cities, Stockton has both good and bad areas but for some reasons most only know about the bad areas in Stockton. There are country club like gated communities and homes by river. There are also clean and beautiful strip malls and numerous wonderful eateries. Just stay away from the shady parts of town and one would see Stockton in a new light.
Stockton California's murder rate skyrockets, defying the national trend.
Soaring homicide rate defies trend
Stockton rate rises 48% even as state's drops
STOCKTON - One of 23 of California's largest cities to record a rise in homicides last year, Stockton defied a general decline in homicides statewide, the Attorney General's Office reported Tuesday.
According to crime data reported in the 89 most populous city and county jurisdictions in California, homicides in 2010 dropped 9.6 percent, and violent crime dropped 6.4 percent.
In Stockton, however, homicides rose from 33 in 2009 to 49 in 2010, a 48 percent increase; violent crime rose 8.9 percent overall.
I don't find a tremendous amount of redeeming things about Stockton; I've always found it to be a less-than-pleasant industrial-feeling port town. It's interesting to see some of the medium sized cargo ships this far inland in California, but I don't thing travelers would find much interest in walking around the port. I'd keep on speeding past on the 5 if I was you.
