Stone Hill Inn

89 Houston Farm Road, Stowe, VT 05672

This Inn is a little different to the luxury and budget resorts that line Stowe’s Mountain Road between the ski areas and the village center. It’s small, with just nine guest rooms and a breakfast room that’s closed to the public. The Inn is tucked away behind a belt of trees, and almost invisible from the road. When you climb ...

You won’t go hungry at Topnotch. The resort’s signature restaurant, Norma’s, serves four meals daily. In the mid-afternoon, a “light fare” menu fills the gap between lunch and dinner. This is great for skiers coming in ravenous from the winter slopes as dusk falls. The view from Norma’s is perhaps unparalleled in the area – the slight elevation from Mountain ...

Stowe Motel & Snowdrift are adjacent motel properties in central Stowe. Unless you want to go and sleep in a ski dorm, the motel’s perhaps your cheapest option for accommodation in this year-round resort town. Just because it’s cheap doesn’t mean it’s lacking in quality – the motel is spick and span, with nice extras including an outdoor swimming pool.

The Riverside Inn is also at the intersection of two busy Stowe roads – Mountain Road to the ski areas and Luce Hill Road to the Trapp Family Lodge. It’s a nice cozy place, with unfussy accommodation in the historic main lodge and also in the newer motel building in the rear.

As Maria sang in ‘The Sound of Music’, “high on a hill was a lonely goatherd.” The Trapp Family Lodge has an amazing location high on the mountain, with stunning mountain vistas from the guestrooms and public areas of the lodge. The lodge and surrounding resort is pretty extensive, so there’s not much chance of a goatherd getting too lonely.

The sprawling, immaculately-designed Stowe Mountain Lodge hovers at the top end of Mountain Road like a massive spaceship. It’s purpose-built, mostly in 2008, for the twenty-first century traveler. Huge, high-ceilinged lobbies open to fancy dining spaces and a long bar for the all-important après-ski. The lodge’s spa suite is simply beautiful -- a heated outdoor pool offers winter swimming with ...

I didn't stay here but I stopped in with some family at the Whip bar and grill downstairs for some drinks and PEI mussels. The Christmas tree in the main staircase and the pine garland were Dickensian and welcoming.

Ye Olde England Inne has a quirky charm all its own, from the gold lions flanking the entryway to the refurbished Britishness of the restaurant and bar. The main building was built in 1830, and a large extension was built in the 1990s. Thirty rooms are spread across the buildings, each decorated with its own style. The Plymouth Suite -- ...

Don’t be put off by the atrocious pun – Stoweflake is a great place to stay. Alternatively, you can sweat, stretch or swim around the resort’s award-winning spa. The accommodations are much fancier than you might anticipate from the somewhat mundane exterior of the resort’s buildings. Dogs can stay with you in the resort’s townhouses or ski house.

It’s close to the slopes but it won’t break the bank! Cookies and hot apple cider in the lobby area are a nice touch in the winter months. Like the famous Commodores song, this inn is “easy like Sunday morning.” The location isn’t the best – it’s on the far side of Stowe village from the mountain ski area – but the resort has room to spread out in across 30 acres of lakeside property. You can’t go wrong with multiple buffets, Jacuzzis and an indoor pool.

The accommodation on offer at Golden Eagle Resort is pretty varied. I preferred the cozy seclusion of the chalets, surrounded by trees. The main guest rooms and suites were certainly pleasant and clean enough, but had a bit of an impersonal, motel-like feel in terms of décor and style. That said, if you just want a basic and comfortable place ...

I stayed here while attending the wedding of my wife's cousin in Montpelier. The rooms are clean yet forgettable but the lobby and dining room have enough of that ski lodge feeling so that you know you're in Vermont.
