When the boats aren't running and you're in a remote area, the lake is beautiful and serene. During the day it's congested with boats full of tourists and the water levels have fallen so the shores are not very pretty. However, I do recommend taking a bike rental and riding alongside the lake on their designated bike route. When you reach the remote areas the views are quite nice and great for pictures.

This is the most famous lake in Taiwan, and thus is heavily populated with tourists in the summer. You'll see nothing but tour busses around here, with each of the small docks peppered with people. There isn't a ton to do around here, but it is beautiful. You can take a boat tour that takes you around the lake and a couple docks where you can step off and sample some street food, and then eat at one of the many restaurants in the main town that all serve local specialties: fresh bamboo shoots, fresh veggies, mushrooms and fresh fish. you can taste the freshness in the vegetables. Carnivores take note: food here runs heavier on the vegetarian side, but there are some meat dishes served in the town.

i never knew taiwan had such a beautiful preserved lake free of trash and pollution! no joke. i worked in taiwan for 2.5 years and finally decided to visit sun moon lake when my friend visited from the lake and it was worth every minute of my time. from the sunset to sunrise, the lake was peaceful and serene. i highly recommend visiting the magnificent/breathtaking lake for a relaxing vacation biking and boating around the lake :)
