The staff here try hard to make guests feel comfortable. From the help-yourself jellybean jar in the lobby to the collection of 300+ DVDs that can be borrowed (free of charge) to watch in the rooms, everything is set up to make you feel like you’re at a home away from home. Not surprisingly, the hotel sees a lot of return visitors who appreciate that intimate, casual feel. I personally prefer hotels with more amenities and areas to hang out (the lobby and gym here are quite small). But still, I can see why certain travellers—especially families—would like the large suites and full kitchens.
The hotel is located in the West End, a residential area on the other side of town. It’s about a 15-minute walk to the heart of downtown, but Davie Street (just a block away) has a lot of restaurant and take-out options.

As far as budget hotels go, this property is looking good. The suites are all nice and clean and although not as polished as higher-end hotels, the Sunset suites have almost everything that you'd need out of a room including full kitchen and air conditioning. The amenities outside of your room are fairly sparse with first-come-first-served parking and a fitness room that's been stuffed into what looks like an old den, but if you're at the Sunset, you're also not interested in room service and in-room spa treatments.
Its location is nice for a few things. First, following the hill down to the south, the hotel is just three blocks from the seawall. Second, it is a block off of Davie Street which is great for cheap food (fine diners will have to head deeper downtown into the business district or Yaletown). Third, it's a block from Burrard Street that heads out of downtown via the Burrard Bridge.
But the real charm of Sunset Inn and Suites is the staff that obviously put a lot of pride into the place. It really seems very well cared-for and the interactions with staff feel pretty genuine which means no fake smiling and what looks like a keen desire to help.
It's not a luxury hotel by any stretch of the imagination but have a look at the deal du jour but I'm pretty sure for the price, it would be hard to find something that's as nice and well-located. It's probably particularly suitable for families so luxury vacation seekers beware.
