The food is good but the ocean views are what's spectacular from this historical site. A nice romantic spot for celebrating a special occasion. If you don't have reservations for the dining room and it's booked, you can also grab a spot in the bar area or dine upstairs at The Bistro.

There are two restaurants at San Francisco's historic cliff house offering sweeping ocean views. Sutro's is the more upscale, with white table cloths and walls adorned with pictures of the Sutro Baths in its glory days in the beginning of the 20th century. The menu is mostly seafood. I had scallops with mushroom risotto. Not the best I've had, but tasty. Ingrid had a cod in a spicy red pepper sauce that I thought was just ok. But the views are unbeatable. Call in advance to book a table. This place is very popular.

This place is really nice! The views are breathtaking, so make sure to get there before sunset.
In case you want to wait for a table by the window, take your time at the bar and enjoy one of their amazing drinks - it's a full bar, so you can order whatever you have in mind.
I tried their Dungeness Crab Cakes and I simply loved it... I think is the best crab cake I've ever had, and I'm almost a crab pro. For the main dish I had scallops and also liked it a lot.
The service here is great, ambiance is nice and everything works, definitely a good place to add to you to do list.
And no, I don't think this is a total tourist trap. The food is good, service is also good and you don't have to wait hours to be seated, so give it a chance.

This is the much-nicer restaurant mentioned in my 1 star review of The Bistro at Cliff House (avoid!) and the only thing at the Cliff House you should consider giving money to.
Yes, it is a tourist trap, but you don't have to feel bad for getting sucked in. I had a really wonderful lunch here once, and the service was excellent. (Edit: I originally said a brunch, but we were eating from the lunch menu and not at the Sunday brunch buffet...which I have not heard good things about.)
It's not "hip," but it is a casual joint for people who still wear shoes...where the servers still look nice, even if you're a little jet lagged and you've been sporting a foam sun visor. It's a decent place to bring old people who expect a little decorum from the help.
You'll end up shelling out big bucks for that fantastic view, but at least the food is delicious enough that you won't necessarily feel like you're getting shafted.
I mean, you probably are getting shafted. You're just getting shafted with lube! Enjoy ;-)
