Swakopmund is great. It is by far one of my favorite places in Africa. This small town has a lot of character and some fantastic shops and restaurants. As Namibia's adventure hub, there's also a ton of stuff to do. Definitely worth a visit.

Definitely get out on those dunes and do some sand boarding (the lie down ones I'd recommend for beginners as on the stand up boards everyone spent most of the day falling and lying down anyway). A bit of a ghost town on the streets at night in town but some good places to go at night if you ask around.

In 2005 I did a 14-day safari with these guys Nomad (http://www.nomadtours.co.za), a South African based safari company. Slept in tents. Fairly inexpensive (about $60 a day, pp, in 2005 prices.) One of the most memorable experiences of my life. Started in Swakopmund, Namibia. Ended in Victoria Falls -- all through Namibia and Botswana.
