Part hostel and part archaeological project, The Sydney Harbour YHA, on a quiet street in the Rocks neighborhood overlooking the water, instantly has a certain cool about it. Though it's pricey by hostel standards, the dorms are very new (each with an ensuite bathroom), and while the privates are basic, they're also spotless, with solid bathrooms. The industrial-warehouse-style floorplan is also plenty cool, suspended over the exposed bedrock of a historical dig. The lounge area and kitchens are well-organized and clean and new, and staff are unfailingly helpful. The location is great; wifi still costs, however.

Just like the archeological site this hostel sits on top of, the Sydney Harbour YHA is an absolute gem of a find. Located on the hilly part of The Rocks, this ‘open plan living’ industrial design hostel offers more than just dorm rooms and bunk beds. Family, twin and double rooms are available and some even come with harbour views. Bathrooms are equipped with towels, soap and hairdryers – which, being female, was just as exciting to me as the harbour views. The additional touches don’t end in the bathrooms either. There’s wi-fi connection and ample computer and Internet stations (both charged at competitive rates). There’s a book exchange, a t.v. room, roof terrace, lounge and commercial size kitchen. You are provided with your own shelf slot to store food, and the fridge space is equally generous. If, like me, you can’t deal with the mornings ‘pre-coffee’, the on-site café serves breakfast, snacks, and more importantly, coffee. Oh, and did I mention this YHA comes WITHOUT curfew and lock-out times?!Recommended for:Family Travelers
