You can stay in Palm Springs and commute up to Joshua Tree for the day, or do as you were thinking and stay two nights in PS and two nights near the park. Just bear in mind that lodgings near the park book up fast, and they're mostly either roadside motels, chain hotels or cool (and more expensive) guesthouses, vacation rentals and B&Bs.
