The oldest city in Hungary, this lively town has seen Septimus Severus' rise to the throne and Saint Martin of Tours' birth. Since its own inception, commerce has been its lifeblood (its Hungarian name translating to "Saturday market"). Today, Austrians boost the economy, flooding across the border to shop (thus nicknaming the town "the discount store"). Wander into local shops or visit ancient ruins, including The Ruin Garden and the shrine of the goddess Isis. The annual Savaria Historical Carnival is held here in August, featuring colorful Roman-age performances like gladiator fights and a parade. Take day-trips to the beautiful Romanesque church at Ják and the spa and castle at Sárvár, home of the infamous "Blood Countess" Báthori.
