While not a particularly popular travel destination for Western tourists, Taiwan is an extremely vibrant island with stunning natural beauty. Sure, there are a few factories, but stay away from the western coast and you'll find out why the first Portuguese explorers named this 'the beautiful island.' First, be sure to enjoy the modern amenities, hustle and bustle culture, and exciting nightlife in Taipei, and the historical city of Tainan, famous for its temples and fortresses. After a few days of hectic city life, you'll be ready to escape to the scenic, peaceful interior. Walk amongst the serene, misty cypress trees of Alishan in the island’s center or head south to Kenting National Park, home to lush vegetation and beautiful beaches. Taiwan also boasts unique festivals and cultural events such as the three-day Spring Scream music and arts festival or Dragon Boat Festival. While traveling in Taiwan, try the local dishes, as many of the larger cities have their own unique cuisines and restaurants showcase the best of the mix.

This place made me feel at home despite being a brief traveler, the infectious down to earth quality grants Taiwan tremendous appeal. Taiwan has the best of street foods and night markets; beautiful, undisturbed views of the mountains and the sea just a hour away from Taipei city; cutesie hobbie imports from Japan and high end fashion brands from Europe; also not to forget is its culture - a visit to the National Palace hosting treasures of thousand-years-old.

A country whose population has to be among the world's friendliest and most helpful Taiwan also excels at quality food. There is a lot to see in Taipei but I would straggly recommend going to other parts of Taiwan such as Taroko National Park, Hualien and Teitung.

Taiwan definitely doesn't get the credit it deserves. It was never on my list of places to visit until one of my friends moved there and the country wow'd me. I'm sure it helped that I had personal local tour guides who took great care of me, but I learned to appreciate the Taiwanese culture in every way especially the amazing cuisine. I had absolutely no idea the food was so unbelievably good. I never thought I'd dare to say this but the food might be better than all the other asian countries I've been to.

I guess bottom line is that I was pleasantly surprised at how much I loved Taiwan and I will definitely be going back to experience more of their culture.

Taiwan is often overlooked by people traveling to Asia, but it is a wonderful place. It's far from touristy, the people are incredibly friendly, the food is awesome, and the scenery is beautiful. There is a reason why Portuguese explorers called it "Formosa" for "beautiful island". Taipei, the capital, is a city that never sleeps--tons of entertainment, and it boasts the world's tallest building.
