Tamarindo is a really fun place to be with a great beach, good surf spots, plenty of shopping, and fun bars. On the bus, it will end up being about 3-4 hours from the Nica border but the bus system in Costa Rica is really reliable and easy to navigate. I stayed in some cabinas there and it was like ...

The last remaining beach in the eastern tropical Pacific that still supports a healthy and heavy population of nesting leatherback sea turtles. The ancient behemoths are other worldly when struggle out onto the beach at night. Visit in January for peak season - amazing!

We stayed at the JW Marriott in Guanacaste. The area is nice, but the beaches are rocky. It's definitely a ways away from everything so you'll need a car. Great if you want a relaxing vacation away from everything.

A small beach town with howler monkeys in the trees, and dive boats and fishing boats ready to take travelers around the area. Most of the reef I saw was dead, but we also saw some big morays, and sharks ans the visibility was good. Supposedly there are some islands a couple hours off shore where there are schools of ...

Let me apologize in advance for most of my reviews being 5 stars. I am taking time to review the really special places first and Playa Junquilla is on the top of the list for tranquility. If that is what you are looking for, please don't let anyone talk you out of spending a day of your precious vacation time ...

This beach restaurant is nice to hang out and enjoy the amazing beach. The ocean is very still in this part of Punta Cana, so it is good to hang out with the family. Try to score a balinese style beach bed so you will be more comfortable enjoying the sun.

Wild, pristine and protected dry forest wilderness directly on the majestic Pacific coast. Not only a Costa Rican national treasure, but a global one as well. Wonderful place to surf or come camp and spot howler monkeys, sea turtles, macaws and coatis. I love this place.

Some epic surf on the beaches right in town, it is something of an expat haven, with juice bars and yoga retreats spotting throughout town. A bit of the beaten track but worth checking out, it you want to hang out somewhere and relax on the beach for a while.

This beach has seemed to cater to a younger, more bohemian crowd. The easy waves make it a good place to learn how to surf. With a little bit of a more established infrastructure that reminds me of Tamarindo circa 1998, water sports are easy to come by and nearby accommodations are comforting though not fancy schmancy by any means. ...

Liberia is a nice town, but doesn't have a lot to it. It's kind of a pass through place. It's got an airport, decent stores and gas stations, but you're a stretch from the beaches and not in the mountains either. It's a much needed crossroads on the way to other places, but not a tourism destination in and of ...

Beautiful, pristine beach on protected bay several hundred yards from Popo's.

Though much of the Nicoya Peninsula is overrun with American expats, and the more touristy spots like Tamarindo have seen a hefty rise in crime in recent years, there are some really beautiful beaches on the peninsula's hard to reach southern end. A small taildragger paired with the right pilot, like the Cessna 185 I shot this picture from, can ...
