I was sold on this hotel almost the moment I walked in and felt the clammy heat of the day give way to coolness. And by coolness I don't just mean the central AC, I mean a three-story-tall wall of plants under a whole-ceiling skylight over the bar. A Greek legend stenciled into a mural on the walls. Coffee tables made out of old suitcases. Enthusiastic staff. And a BDSM-themed room called Love Ouch. The hotel is so brand new that you can almost smell the paint drying, but you can tell it already fits into the artsy hip charm of Casco Viejo. You'll pay for this hipness, and not just with the room prices – a can of Coke and a small bottle of water cost us $7. But as you drink them, under the wall of plants, you won't mind.

Tantalo Hotel is located in the Old City of Panama. You can walk to here from the Fish Market and the mall. I highly recommend you come here to have a drink at the rooftop bar. The rooftop offers amazing views of the city.

This 12-room boutique hotel in Casco Viejo also includes Tantalo Kitchen and Rooftop bar. Each room was designed by a different artist currently residing in Panama. The hotel was the first hotel to have a green wall in Panama. Its rooftop bar was the first in Casco, and now rooftop bars are springing up on almost every suitable roof.

Tantalo is a boutique hotel heavy on the boutique with a very helpful, friendly staff. Only recently opened, investors from the States have built out an amazing space to play while in Panama City. You walk in to what is the restaurant and are greeted by curated hip-hop, pop punk and reggae. The menu is pricey with a Coke and bottled water registering at $6, but you are clearly paying for the atmosphere. The Tantalo has 12 themed rooms with excellent views of the surrounding neighborhood. We saw the room called "Love, Ouch" which was designed around an S&M theme. If you are looking for something a little milder first, check out the rooftop bar. Rooms range from $240-$300.
