Taormina is a little too perfect for it's own good. Perched on a cliff in the way that only happens in Italy, the town is stunningly attractive, with dozens of fabulous shops and boutiques, but it can get overly crowded during high season. However, from Oct to Apr, you can enjoy plenty of elbow room visiting the historic sights and almost perfectly preserved stone town. The half-dozen beaches below the main city are some of the best in Sicily, including charming Isola Bella, a tiny island accessed by cable car.

Taormina is set between the fire of Etna and the sweet climate of the Mediterranean coast. Can you guess how warm it can be even in the wintertime. I love this place. Here no foreshortening my glance can touch is less than beautiful and charged with history.

This popular Sicilian resort town is filled with tourists deposited here (for a couple of hours) from cruise ships. Although we spent over 24 hours here, a horrible rain storm put a damper on our tour. Taormina has lots of upscale restaurants and shops. However, overall, it seemed less friendly than the other towns and cities we visited in Sicily.

Taormina has the best of both worlds: the medieval town up above, and the bustling beach down below. There's a 15-minute cable car ride that you can take between the two. Lido Mazzaro is one of the nicest beaches on the island and probably has the most services. There are also lots of restaurants and bars that line the beach where you can grab something to eat or drink.

Despite its stunning views and an astonishing number of super de luxe hotels, Taormina has been ravaged by generations of tourism and has about as much charm as New York's Times Square.
