It may look a little strange from the outside, a Spanish-themed tapas restaurant in Reykjavik, but don't let that deter you; Tapas Barrin will knock your socks off with its exotic southern twist on traditional Icelandic fare.

Grab an Icelandic beer from the bar and look over the menu. Will you try the mink whale, the shark, or the puffin first (The pros and cons of the minky whale industry notwithstanding)? Never fear, Tapas Barrin has you covered with a sampler platter! Have a little of each; you'll be surprised at how tasty it all is. For the morally (or otherwise) opposed, they have other, more whale-friendly, carnivore and vegetarian platters and dishes available which are equally delicious.

This place was so good we came here twice and there were still new things to try and surprises. It was the only restaurant to reasonably try puffin and whale (without spending an arm and a leg and ordering a full meal of it without knowing if you would be spitting it out). The puffin aka salt lick, I could've done without, but the whale tasted like innovative ahi tuna in blueberry sauce. Plus, there's always sangria to wash it down!

Extremely well-prepared tapas with an international flair. The Icelandic Journey 7-course chef's choice meal was wicked expensive, but very good. The sangria is not too good, don't waste your money on that.

Description

Tuck into a traditional Icelandic feast at Tapas Barrin, starting your meal off with Brennivin, the infamous Icelandic spirit. The restaurant takes the Spanish tradition of sampling many different flavors, serving up tapas-sized portions and giving diners the chance to try a variety of plates. Be sure to order the Puffin with Blueberry-and Brennivín sauce and end the evening with coffee or a sumptuous dessert.
