The Teatro Greco in Taormina is the remains of an amphitheater from a much older time. We visited in the morning when it was still a bit cold and misty out and had a pleasant time wandering through the ruins. It's perched on the cliffs and the view is fantastic.

Although there are larger Greek or Roman theatres and amphitheatres in Italy, there are none in as stunning a location as the Teatro Greco in Taormina. New enough so that it's as likely to be Roman as Greek, the theatre is a perfect example of ancient architectural ingenuity. While the original seats are now gone, much more (thankfully) comfortable seating hosts guests for performances all summer long. You can visit and tour around during the day. Try arriving around sunset for the view to end all views.
