Located just west of downtown is Templo Expiatorio, a 19th century gothic church with dramatic 15-meter tall stained glass windows. Outside is a popular plaza--a perfect place to get a sense of a local neighborhood, especially on weekends. You'll find street performers, 'esquite' (corn) carts, homemade tamales (sold on the east side of the church, from the cook's front porch--just look for the line of people), and the requisite balloon and cotton candy vendors too.

Construction on this neo-Classical gem was begun in 1897, and took seventy-five years to complete. And while the exterior stands out in Guadalajara, make sure your visit includes viewing the interior of the breathtaking Church!
