The James K. Polk Tennessee State Museum is really two museums in one-- the state museum and a military museum-- for one low admission price: free. This museum is pretty hip for a museum, but that's what comes from being in Nashville. They have everything you need to satisfy a history buff, but they've also got contemporary and bespoke exhibits that are entertaining and amusing. For instance, right now they have an exhibit of watercolors by Steve Wariner. They even do special events for things like Halloween. It's located right downtown, and since it's free, there's absolutely no excuse not to visit.
