Back in the day, the closest things I had to this was the pool table in Priestley Hall's (Unit III) lounge, and the casino night for Cal Camp charities we organized with full craps, roulette, black jack, cocktail waitresses, and horse races I announced over the PA (a la the old movie Sting, with voice over) of the reennacted race using a printout from a horse racing program my CS major buddies concocted for me to read by furlongs. Well, and the occasional Unit III Dining Commons party. Back in those days, all the Jocks were in Norton Hall, all the Asians in Cheney, the Hippies in Spens-Black, and the Geeks and Nerds in Priestley. Me, I was the front man for the Geeks and Nerds.
Of course, this is DT Berkeley, Shattuck Avenue, so it's several blocks from campus, so it is more in the "adult" area vs the "teen" area of the campus.
Thalassa combines at least 19 pool tables with a large bar, lounge, some seating, a rear open air patio for smokers, and loud piped in music to create a go-to destination for the college crowd.
You can find mostly 20's somethings and some 30 and older somethings congregating here, and on Saturday nights, it gets hella crowded. You can find a mixed group, from the geeks and Asians playing pool, the sons and daughters of Hippies and I-House foreigners in the lounge, the drunk dudes and chics by the bar looking to hook up with anyone, and the home boys in the rear smoking and drinking.
The vibe is relaxed an unpretentious, part dorm party and cocktail hour, what you might expect from Berkeley, where what's in your head is more important than what's on your body.
There is no cover, which is cool for the student budget. Getting a pool table on weekends could be a long wait, so chill and have a drink while you wait. Parking is not plentiful, so don't do anything stupid to get you booted, either on your car or by the establishment.
In my day, it was a pitcher of beer at Kip's upstairs while playing team variants of chess or word games with my fellow dormies.
One thing about Berkeley, it is a center of change. That is a good thing.

Growing up in Iowa, the local small-town pool hall had a very dark and smokey character. The heavily male crowd usually consisted of townie kids, old guys and "greasers". And it had been around for many years. In fact, my Dad and my Uncle had come in here too during their day. But, I had a great time, stayed out of trouble, picked up a few good life and game tips, and kind of learned how to play Snooker.
Thalassa - this well-lit and modern version of the old pool hall is also a great place to hang out with friends and play several friendly games of 8-Ball or Slop Rotation with your favourite adult beverage in hand. Nice selection of music too. There are no greasers or smoke here in this somewhat yup-scale locale. And despite the somewhat younger crowd, "old" guys are welcome too.
I usually come earlier since I'm not really a night owl and I hate bumping into people when I'm trying to frame my shot. I also slightly prefer the front room, only because it's nice to be able to look out onto Shattuck and watch the world go by between shots.

The place isn't half bad......I didn't have a problem with it...a lot of nice if sometimes stuck up people, and they let you take food inside...cheap drinks and food what more can you ask for. I wish I lived closer but oh well. I remember the last time I was there, my company threw a party there, and it was a good time and I got drunk. Good times abound!
Oh, and I hear they offer the ever favorite past time called pool. As with some places I apparently do not have the stomach for the intended function of the venue that I am patronizing however at all places I do go i can say that the available drink is satisfying.
