An hour bus ride from town or half hour drive with a car. There's quite a lot to see at the Belize Zoo, from wild animals to tame ones. It's about a half day adventure and activity. I wish I hadn't lost my sd card photos or I would have it to share.

Voted Best Little Zoo in the World. See the animals in their natural environment. Bring Bug Spray ;-)

The Belize Zoo isn't at all like the typical zoo you might be imagining. Home to tons of animals that were either injured or orphaned (and thus wouldn't have survived in the wild), the Belize Zoo does all it can to make these animals' new environments feel like the habitats nature intended. Monkeys, for example, aren't in cages - the trees they're in just stop after a while so they can't swing outside of the park. But they've got plenty more space to roam than any other zoo I've visited. Some animals are in large cages, but with large enough holes that birds and rodents from the outside world can come in and interact with them. And given that so much of Belize's wildlife is pretty hard to spot in the wild, this is likely your best bet to see a jaguar, for example, while simultaneously supporting animal rehabilitation projects. Speaking of jaguars, don't leave without paying a little extra to get in the jaguar cage (seriously) with Buddy Junior, a jaguar who will give you sandpapery "kisses" if you stick your head against his cage. With supervision, you can also feed him chicken parts, bone and all, and watch him crunch away as you huddle in a tiny cage within his larger cage. Highly recommended, even for those who typically are against caging animals in typical zoos.

The best little zoo you will ever visit. Animals in their natural habitats, interesting signage....close up to the animals so READ THE SIGNS.

The day we went it was very hot and humid. The zoo itself was very different from the zoos we have visited in the states. The animals were so close you could touch them (if you were brave enough). There were lots of different types of animals to see...some not even in cages.
