Hotel Ocean’s more upscale sister property was designed by the same person who did the Gansevoort (now The Perry) and it feels similar--modern if a little girly. This is one of Ocean Drive’s historic buildings that’s been made over but the revamp is still pretty new so things like the flatscreens and the rainfall shower heads aren't worn out. Another plus: the rooms here don’t feel poky like they do at other Art Deco hotels. The hotel pool finally opened in January, although it’s more of a human fish bowl, since it’s really a plunge pool, and has a clear side that means you can see swimmer’s submerged legs from the street below. The loungers by the pool are front-and-center seats to all the Ocean Drive action, and the rooftop lounge, open to guests during the day, is an even better place to perch. At night, it’s used for private events but you can have a bottle of Chianti at Italian restaurant Nine instead.

This is one of those South Beach iconic spots in which it seems the primary motive for being here at all is to see and be seen. The entire place has a club-like vibe to it that's continuous with the traffic of adjacent Ocean Drive. Here you can let people watch you drink fantastically expensive cocktails at their sidewalk cafe, or put it all on display by splashing into the windowed swimming pool, visible to all who walk by on the street below. The building itself is true South Beach Art Deco at its best and the hotel does a good job of modernizing luxuries in keeping with the hip, retro style. I wouldn't recommend this place to families or anyone looking for a quiet beach escape. It's full time work being a beautiful and glamorous SoBe socialite and, if you're staying here, you obviously just signed up for the job...

Miami might be famous for its vice and its heat, but no one embraces both with the same enthusiasm as The Breakwater Hotel. Located on a prime stretch of Ocean Drive, the South Beach section of Miami Beach, The Breakwater embraces its location with an unmatched vivacity. All around its Art Deco neon beacon of a sign, the icons of Miami Beach splay out at their best: the white sand beach and luxuriously blue ocean are right there beckoning to you; the throbbing nightlife pulses all around like a non-stop disco; the Deco district is in full glory–with none other than the Art Deco Museum literally across the street. The Breakwater takes all these and infuses them into its own personality. Here, they put the vixen in vice and the hot in heat.
The rooms are stylishly retro, flirtatiously adorned with pin up girls who all seem to be inviting you to “slip into something more comfortable.” We highly recommend that you take their advice–this is Miami after all. Though the rooms themselves are perhaps a bit oddly laid out, the interior decoration maximizes each space, making you feel comfortable and welcome, wrapped into your private little mod world. With a huge, delightfully engrossing bed and a wonderfully luxurious rain shower, how could you feel anything but blissfully at ease? And, after a long night out, you will gladly walk the ½ block back to your hotel room to find the pleasant soundtrack of birds and wind chimes included in the turn down service, soothing you away from the boom-booming house music that lingered too long in your ears.
