I liked the retro feel of this horseshoe-shaped “boutique motel” as soon as I turned into the stone courtyard driveway. Built in the 1940s, most of the structures are the original brick, wood, and cinderblock. The thick walls make the accommodations feel more like private bungalows than attached units. While they are small, the rooms are filled with natural light, and all but three have vaulted, wooden ceilings. The bathrooms are downright tiny. Still, I forgive them this, as a remodel would be impossible while preserving the vintage property, which I love. Although parking is included in the price of the stay, the main challenge of the Inn is that the driveway is situated on the corner of Sunset Blvd and Kenter Ave (near Bundy). Traffic can get really dense, so plan on arriving from the west, and departing to the east, so that you can turn right whether coming in or out of the driveway. Also be aware that their cancellation policy requires a stiff week’s notice for a refund.

If you’re looking for a hotel in Brentwood, you have three options: the Angeleno, the Luxe and here. The other two are nice, but this one is very unique because it’s in a residential area that wouldn’t otherwise allow even a “boutique motel” to move in now—good thing the place has been around since the 40s. There are only 21 rooms, and friendly front desk staff suggests booking at least six weeks out for summer. If you reserve far enough in advance, you may even be able to take advantage of AAA rates.

The continental breakfast is free, as are milk and cookies in the afternoon. There’s a nice fireplace in the lobby and a patio adjacent to it, too. Most rooms have vaulted ceilings except for three in the bottom-middle of the U-shaped property (450, 451, and 452). Parking is free, but there’s no pool, restaurant or fitness center.
