With the hint of an African Game Hunters lodge The Canyons Lodge is nothing if not unique. Located a pleasant 5min drive from Queenstown on the banks of the Shotover River this beautiful lodge is awash with images of the veldt and the odd lion skin on the floor. The Deluxe room on the top floor is jaw-droopingly good and well worth the extra bucks to upgrade. With a bathtub shaped like Cinderella's slipper and facing out a floor to ceiling window it's not hard to feel like a princess (or prince) when you settle into a bubble bath in this one. Hardwood and stylish appointments permeate the lodge with a the hint of classic Hemmingway Esq. grandeur at every turn. The highlight of the property must be the perfectly placed spa bath that allows you to soak up the mountain views as you soak away the day - bliss.

Situated five minutes drive from central Queenstown above the magnificent Shotover River Canyon, this place completely exceeded my expectations! The rooms themselves were so beautifully done with hard wood floors, subtle décor, beautiful linen and reclining claw foot baths. The place is designed to truly taking advantage of the amazing views down the canyon towards Coronet Peak from every single room, including the outdoor hot tub. The kitchen, lounge and dining areas were lovely and spacious with dark leather couches that you could sink right into. This place is going to make you want to give up all the adventurous activities you might have planned for Queenstown to stay here and relax – and the bottle of local pinot noir provided in each room won’t make it any easier! If budget allows, the spacious superior room is truly worth it – it’s got the best view from a bathtub I have ever seen.
