The Clarence is owned by Bono and the Edge of U2 but if you’re expecting a rock ‘n’ roll vibe then you’ll be sorely disappointed – there’s not a hint of the hotel’s star connection to be found. The general feel is pared-down traditional – lots of white walls and pale wood panelling in the public areas. The bedroom was similarly styled, which made it a good calming place to come back to after the hustle and bustle of the city. The location is very central – right in the middle of Temple Bar – but just out-of-the-way enough that you won’t be surrounded by drunken idiots the minute you step out the door. The Clarence Tea Rooms are a well-known afternoon-tea spot in Dublin and the food is perfectly nice, but if you want an all-out high tea experience you’ll find more ostentatious tea rooms elsewhere.Recommended for:

The one thing I knew about the Clarence before visiting was that it was part-owned by U2. I was expecting something at least vaguely rock-and-roll, modern, loud . . . but the only hint of that was a man passing through the lobby with a saxophone case. He might have been in a band, though. The hotel has a rather old feel to it – lots of high oak paneling, dark corridors, wrought-iron light fixtures. The room was pleasantly simple and understated without being cold. The calm demeanor of the place sets it apart from the rest of Temple Bar, which even at the far western end is still quite active in the small hours of a Saturday morning. Rooms on the north side have spectacular and uncommon views of the River Liffey.Recommended for:
