I’d thought that the Croke Park Hotel would be completely devoted to the rowdy goings-on at the stadium next door and cater exclusively to sports fans, but that is not the case. It’s quite an elegant and modern hotel, and the designers took on board the sports theme and reproduced it in a way that suits their own style: instead of pinning up signed jerseys and polyurethane pennants, they hang framed and burgundy-matted photographs of 19th-century Gaelic football teams. TV coverage of matches is projected onto a wall with sleek gas fireplaces underneath. The room was comfortable and spacious, and came complete with a nicely-arranged fruit bowl. Unless you’re there for the stadium or its convention rooms, the location can be a bit awkward: there are buses routes nearby, but it is a slight trek into the city for sightseeing.

This is a business-class hotel – clean, modern and sophisticated in an espresso-coloured wood kind of way but not especially luxurious or interesting. The rooms are a good size and have everything you would expect and there’s a decent fitness room and very nice conference facilities. The location could be great if you’re planning on attending a GAA match at Croke Park, nearby, but otherwise it’s not really ideal – it’s too far to walk to the city centre (especially if it’s raining) and transport links are not fantastic although there are regular buses into town and to the airport from up the road. On the plus side – the restaurant is very good so you won’t have to trek into the city for your dinner if you don’t feel up to the journey.

I feel like I'm starting to sound like a broken record, but ... this place was clean, convenient for business travel, and close enough to my company's $150/night hotel budget. But, it was nowhere near the heart of Dublin. So, we just ended up taking a taxi into town for dinner, which was easy enough, but it's not the same as actually staying in the fun part of the city.

This was the best hotel we stayed at in Ireland, hands down. The room was modern, spacious and had the most comfortable beds and pillows of the trip. The staff was helpful, and the bar/restaurant were reasonably priced. It was a short taxi ride to the airport, which was a plus for our early morning flight. It seemed a little far to walk to central Dublin, but the weather had a lot to do with that, in a cold rainy December.
