Set on the famous Oxford Street in the commercial marble Arch area in Central London is the Cumberland, a surprisingly charming large scale hotel featuring 1000 guestrooms — the 2nd largest hotel in London. While the corridors are slightly stuffy, most of the rooms ranging from standard to apartments feature a reasonably contemporary décor, are spacious and airy, include comfortable beds along with standard amenities and double glazed windows blocking the street noise. For fine dining, the W1 Brasserie features a menu of European classics with a distinctly British twist on an intimate ambiance. Rhodes Patrón Bar is highly trendy and offers perfect cocktails on a smart setting. Several conference rooms are available on the lower ground, and are surprisingly versatile, stylish and airy , the contemporary Ocean Room is ideal for weddings and large corporate events. Despite large traffic in the public areas, the general atmosphere is Zen; the ongoing classical music playing at the reception is especially relaxing. Service is slightly inefficient, but generally friendly.

The giant lobby is bedecked with oversized statues of men floating in the air and pod-like seats. Oh, and video installations of more men floating through water. I thought, initially, that this might bode well in the creativity department, but the rooms are small-ish and the whole place actually feels kind of impersonal. The location is ridiculously convenient for touring, as it's next to Marble Arch tube and Oxford Street, but I'd go boutique over gigantic any day.

This hotel was recently renovated, and I shudder to think what it looked like before. OK, perhaps that is a bit harsh. The lobby is very nice and the location right at marble arch is fantastic. That said, the rooms were like shoe boxes - I literally could barely squeeze between my bed and the desk. The breakfast area is in a basement with no windows. All in all the layout is poor. In a pinch you could stay here if you had to, but there are nicer hotels in London for the money.
