The Custom House opened for business in 1791. It cost £200,000 to build and was almost destroyed during the War of Independence in 1921. James Gandon was the architect, and this fine neoclassical building, now houses the Department of the Environment.

Beautiful 18th century building. It is lit up at night which is an impressive sight.

Description

This broad, 18th century neoclassical building dominates the quays along the northbank of River Liffey. Though it was not a popular building when it was constructed in the 1780s - it was thought to be excessively large and expensive and in the wrong location - it is now considered a jewel of a landmark building. Today, most of it is not accessible to the public, but a portion of it displays the history of the building and its fascinating, stubborn architect, James Gandon.
